Photography of the great outdoors at its very best…
Landscapes, seascapes, coastlines against rolling hills, dramatic mountains, captured imaginatively, creatively and with a heartfelt passion.
Accessible or remote… there is something for everyone’s pictorial taste buds with the Land and Sea Scapes Collection.
You will probably remember and evoke memories of some great days out of your own, a traditional summer holiday by the British seaside, or hiking in the hills, dales or lakes across the UK geography, unwrapping a great picnic lunch and savouring the views and vistas unfolding in front of you or which you happen upon… or from seeing a new contemporary scape never before visited, full of colour and amazing light.
A few Top Tips:
Coastlines present the photographer with an endless choice of photographic possibilities ranging from people shots on a crowded summer beach to landscape images with crashing waves, rugged cliff edges and moody skies or an abstract impact image. Read on for some top tips on photographing coastline landscapes, which we hope will inspire your own shots, as well as encourage you to view our fine art photographic print section:
It is important to find a point of interest in your shot. This is particularly important in coast line shots which, in the main, are made up of sky and water. Although the combination of sea and sky can be beautiful, it is worth considering that unless you have something in your frame to draw the eye in, you are unlikely to create something that holds their interest. The focal point in your image might be a physical aspect of the landscape, (like a rock in the sea) movement (waves, children running) or even texture, pattern or reflection (ripples in the water).
Reflections can create stunning images. If you are around large bodies of water, it is likely that you will naturally introduce an element of reflection into their shots. If you want to eliminate reflections, consider moving the position that you’re shooting from or using a polarising filter. However, the reflections of a colourful sky or interesting rock formation can add depth and interest to your shots.
If the sky is the main subject in your image, shoot in landscape format and make sure the horizon is in the lower third of the image to avoid a symmetrical, flat looking image.
Locations that have an element of movement often present themselves with both opportunities and challenges for a photographer. While the coast can be a still and serene place, it can also be one of constant movement, particularly with wind and waves, and also at the time of the year you are photographing too. Try shooting with longer shutter speeds (with a tripod or steady surface) and try to capture this movement – the results can be breath taking.
